LATEST NEWS : Thermofisher Scientific PLC, West Pharmaceutical Services PLC and the Marine Biological Association have joined the project.

INTRODUCTION

A pioneer programme towards establishing a South of England matrix of 'Science Tuition Centres' (STC) to tutor Key Stage 4 and 5 Gifted and Talented students. It will promote the next generation of science graduates and future employees for the Bioscience industry. The programme will provide high quality tailored work placements in a Bioscience business. The programme will also provide specialist science tuition working towards a minimum Level 2 Key Skill qualification.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

1. To promote awareness of career opportunities in the bioscience sector.
2. To provide stimulating educational resources linked to the workplace.
3. To provide a unique educational experience for Gifted and Talented young people.

KEY ACTIVITIES

1. Industry based placement with a local Bio Science company.
2. Three week science tuition programme delivered by a specialist science teacher.
3. Interactive course material based on the Bio Science industry provided for each student.
4. A Key Skill qualification based on a brief from a local Bio Science Company.
5. Interaction with senior members of the Bio Science Sector.
6. Impact analysis and evaluation feedback to centres.

ADVISORY GROUP
An Advisory Group will be set up for strategic and tactical augmentation of the Sector. It will consist of senior representatives from the industry and supporting organisations :

•  Cornwall Education Business Partnership (Julie Fellows)

•  SWRDA Bio and Medical representative (Dr Gagan Lushai)

•  Science Teachers Network representative (Mark Goodwin – Head of Science)

•  CUC Representative (Peter Castell)

•  LSC (Phillipa Collett)

•  UKTI representative (Rob Thompson)

•  Business Advisor (Gilbert McCabe)

•  Industry Representative (Alan Whittle – ThermoFisher Scientific PLC)

•  Wainui (SW) Limited (Peter Howarth-Jarratt)
